Why a hand surgeon?

Orthopaedic hand specialists complete additional fellowship training beyond orthopaedic residency in Surgery of the Hand and Upper Extremity. Following this, some then apply for membership in the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), which requires passage of a rigorous certifying exam. They then are elected members of the ASSH with a subspecialty certification in Surgery of the Hand (SOTH), previously called Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand (CAQ). Not all hand surgeons have this added qualificiation. Throughout their careers, elected members, like Dr. Altman, must maintain certification by fulfilling specific practice requirements, and by completing ongoing medical education credits. Recertifying exams must also be passed every 10 years.

Dr. Altman is among just a few hand surgeons whose practices include treatment of the entire upper extremity from the shoulder to the hand. With his expertise and experience, he understands the unique interdependence of all parts of the arm, functioning together as a single unit. For more information, go to www.assh.org.
